Research Seminar by Prof Malcolm Langford on "Trustworthy AI and Courts"

Event Details

Event End Date

We were privileged to host External Research Fellow Professor Malcolm Langford (University of Oslo) for an insightful seminar on Trustworthy AI and Courts, chaired by CDL Director Assoc Prof Jason Grant Allen.

Prof Langford highlighted the deep scepticism surrounding the use of AI in judicial decision-making, pointing to both normative risks—such as inaccuracy, limited explainability, and weak accountability—and sociological risks to public trust. While emerging legal standards aim to provide guardrails, they face two key challenges: (1) the Collingridge dilemma, where intervention may come either too early or too late, and (2) an overreliance on legal obligations as sufficient and enforceable safeguards. His presentation examined how AI should be tested, developed, and deployed in court systems, and what governance models are required to ensure responsible and trustworthy use.

We are grateful to Prof Langford for advancing conversations on how AI can be integrated into judicial processes in ways that uphold public trust and legal integrity.
