Event Details

Event End Date

SMUCDL was privileged to host Prof Lyria Bennett Moses, Head of the School of Law, Society and Criminology in the Faculty of Law and Justice at UNSW Sydney, for a thought-provoking research seminar on Regulation Beyond Technology, chaired by Assoc Prof Han-Wei Liu, Deputy Director of SMUCDL.

In her seminar, Prof Bennett Moses examined how academic and policy approaches to law and technology often fall into familiar patterns—beginning with the definition of a specific technology and centring discussions on its potential benefits and regulatory constraints. Tracing the origins of this mindset, she explored how such framing can limit our understanding of governance challenges, using artificial intelligence and fairness as a case study.

The seminar invited participants to reconsider these established approaches, encouraging a shift away from technology-centric thinking towards broader starting points for navigating governance in an increasingly complex socio-technical landscape.

We are grateful to Prof Bennett Moses for a stimulating and insightful discussion that contributed meaningfully to ongoing conversations on legal adaptation and regulatory design in the digital age.
