On 16 July 2025, we were pleased to host Professor Dov Greenbaum for an insightful research seminar on Autonomous Weapons and AI Warfare: Ethical Challenges for the Asia-Pacific Region.
The session examined how AI-enabled military technologies are reshaping regional stability, military doctrine, and international humanitarian law, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific. Prof Greenbaum explored ethical and strategic dilemmas surrounding lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), highlighting Singapore’s unique position as both a technology hub and proponent of responsible AI governance.
Through a multidisciplinary lens—including law, ethics, and public health—the seminar addressed the rising risks of AI warfare, from healthcare disruption to psychological operations, while outlining pathways for regional cooperation and innovation in defence AI oversight.
The session concluded with a lively and thought-provoking Q&A, where participants engaged in meaningful discussion on the regulation of autonomous weapons and the broader implications of military AI. We thank Prof Greenbaum for sharing his perspectives on one of the most urgent and complex challenges in the governance of emerging technologies.
