SMUCDL hosted Dr. June Park, CDL's Senior Research Affiliate, for an insightful talk on The Rise of Chips Clusters and Data Centers amid Export Controls and Geopolitical Uncertainty at SMU Yong Pung How School of Law, moderated by Assoc Prof. Liu Han-Wei, CDL's Deputy Director.
There was a thought-provoking discussion on the evolving US-China chips war, touching on Taiwan, South Korea, the Middle East, and especially ASEAN/Singapore’s perspective. Dr. Park’s insights, alongside Assoc Prof. Liu's exchange of views on Taiwan's regulatory experience and dilemma, underscored how shifting regulatory landscapes and strategic interests are reshaping semiconductor supply chains and data infrastructure, reminding us that collaboration (willingly or otherwise) and foresight are more critical than ever—especially as TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), the world’s largest and most advanced chip foundry, faces mounting pressures. This conversation is especially crucial for AI development and diffusion, as access to cutting-edge chips shapes global technological leadership.
We thank Dr. Park and Assoc Prof. Liu for an incredibly valuable session that provided insights from political, legal, and technological perspectives.
