On 13 March 2025, we had the privilege of hosting Cheryl Seah, Industry Fellow at SMUCDL and Director at Drew & Napier LLC, for a thought-provoking lecture on the legal and ethical Intellectual Property (IP) issues arising from developing generative AI solutions.
A leading practitioner at the intersection of law and technology, Cheryl shared her expertise on key challenges in the generative AI landscape. She explored how data is scraped, collected, and utilized, discussing the legal implications of these practices. She also examined IP concerns, particularly copyright issues related to AI-generated outputs, alongside data protection considerations and the implications of Singapore's Computer Misuse Act. As generative AI relies on vast amounts of data for training and development, the legal issues surrounding data collection, mining, and usage are more critical than ever. Her comparative analysis of regulatory approaches in the US and China provided a valuable global perspective on AI governance.
We thank Cheryl Seah for delivering such an insightful session, deepening our understanding of the evolving legal landscape of generative AI.
