SMU Yong Pung How School of Law and ANU College of Law jointly organised the ANU-SMU Global Digital Economy Forum 2024 from 26-27 November. This strategic partnership between ANU and SMU aims to advance common research priorities and brought together leading academics, industry experts, policymakers, and representatives from international organisations to tackle pressing legal and regulatory challenges in the global digital economy.

Day 1 featured three thought-provoking panel discussions that bridged Asian and global perspectives, fostering innovative discussions across academia, industry, and government. The day concluded with SMUYPHSL’s Assoc Prof Jason Grant Allen announcing the formation of the SMU Centre for Digital Law.

Day 2 featured two dynamic panels and the ANU-SMU MAKER-X Engagement, which facilitated collaboration between ANU and SMU faculty for collaborative pilot projects under the strategic partnership between both universities, and provided an opportunity for other global experts to co-develop project proposals. The Engagement’s insights also contributed to the preparation of a MOE Tier 3 proposal by SMUYPHSL’s Assoc Profs Jason Grant Allen and Han-Wei Liu, centered on the theme 'Singapore at the Digital Crossroads: Navigating a Multipolar Digital World Order’.

Key topics explored during the Forum included:
•  Trade in Data, Technology Supply Chains, and Industrial Policy
•  Trade and Investment Digitalization
•  AI, Productivity, and the Future of Work
•  Business Risk and Cybersecurity
•  Digital Currency Competition and FinTech Regulation

This Forum underscores the critical importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing challenges and opportunities of the evolving global digital economy. We thank all esteemed speakers, discussants, and attendees for their invaluable contributions, and to The Australian National University for this strategic partnership; and look forward to growing these collaborations into impact.
